You Don’t Have to “Push Through” to Make Progress

In sports, school, and sometimes even healthcare, we’re taught that pain means progress. That suffering builds strength. That if you’re not pushing, you’re not growing.

But for people with chronic illness, hypermobility, or pain conditions, that mindset hurts more than it helps.

“Pushing through” often leads to setbacks

You push through a flare… and then crash.
You force a workout… and can’t function for two days.
You ignore your limits… and feel shame when your body rebels.

Progress doesn’t have to mean pain.
It can mean listening. Adapting. Pacing.

What progress actually looks like:

  • Being able to do the same task with less fear

  • Recovering faster after activity

  • Adding one new thing per week — not per day

  • Feeling more confident in your body

  • Saying “no” when needed, without guilt

What we do instead of pushing

At Connective Care Physical Therapy, we meet you where you are. That means:

  • Finding your current capacity

  • Practicing consistency over intensity

  • Honoring the need for rest and safety

  • Celebrating small, sustainable changes

You don’t have to break your body to make it stronger.
